valves kz900

Ok, i am going to check the valve clearance on my 76kz900. I have a clymer manual and i am going to buy a tool for removing shims if needed. The bike has 31,000 on the clock and i doubt they have ever been checked. I have never done this and any helpfull hints would be appretiated. The manual seems pretty clear except for the math on the shim size. I may need my wife to look at that part! I am not very good at math.

Look in the very back. Sone manuals have a chart that you can cross over from what you have and the clearance you just measured and will tell you what shim is needed to make it right again.

Shim sizes are the metric size for the thickness. 250 shim is 2.5 mm thick, etc.
The sizes are .05 difference, ( 245, 250 255, etc) each of those are .approx .002".
Pretty simple when you get into it.

thanks for the reply george, I will be sending you my carbs for rebuilding this winter. Wisconsin winters can be very long and cold so, that means parking the bike. Arthrietis keeps me from riding in the cold!
