KZ 1100-A2 1982 cylinder head question

On my project KZ 1100-A2 Shaft 1982, I've taken the head apart and found that the exhaust valve guide on cylinder #4 slides up and down in the head. I ordered a new valve guide (49002-1002) but I'm not equipped to remove old guide and replace with the new one. Also, I'm not sure the new one will not slide also.

Has anyone ever heard of this problem and what can I do to solve?

Hello and welcome, wilk. Is the guide loose enough that you can easily move it...or has it merely moved in the head?

Oversize valve guides are available (check KzZone, AKA APE), they may not be oversize enough, depending on how big the hole is now.

Yes, I can move it up and down by about 3/4" by hand between retainer clip at top and carbon build-up on the bottom.

Wilk...Yikes!...follow steell's advice and contact APE (KZZone) [look on the right hand side of the page for a link under THE ESSENTIALS]. You'll eventually chat with Jay at APE and he is very helpful. This problem is something that may be beyond an easy fix:(

Our first oversize is .004". That may be too big. When we run into this situation, we custom machine a guide to the right size.

We would need to have the head to see what size the guide needs to be. Also, after installing the guide, that seat would have to be recut. May as well do them all.

This is a budget re-build as I don't know how the rest of the bike works. What is the difference in price to fix 1 valve vs. 8?

I keep a couple of carburetor test bikes running. When I run into a situation similar to the one you face, I just replace the head with one that doesn't have a problem using a spare. I keep a couple good spares on hand just for this purpose. If you are trying to do this project inexpensively, you may want to buy a spare head from eBay and hopefully, it will not have similar issues.

Thanks all for your feedback. I finally found a specialized local machine shop dedicated to performance motorcyle work. They will machine out the guide and put in a new oversized one for $135. Expensive but they seem experienced and i think it will get done properly.
