Well guys I made up a little table to try and decide what to do next.I swapped one shim but it didn't help. You guys take a look and see what you think best.

Shim
Location
Gap
No
(thds)
230
Test Shim
250
I/1
6(-)Read 6minus;5 fits loose
252
I/2
6 (no mark on shim)
255
I/4
4
260
I/3
3+ (3 loose)
265
E/4
4
285
E/3
0 (Button won't turn)
290
E/2
4+
295
E/1
5

The only swap I made this go round, was E/3 to I/1. Before the swap I had 10thds at E/3 and 0, button would not turn, at I/1
The only one I like "as is" is I/3.
I think maybe move shim from E/1 to E/2. Maybe move shim from E/2 to I/2.

I did not do the math before posting the two swaps I proposed to do. The swap from E/1 to E/2 looks like a winner. The swap from E/2 to I/2 won't work at all, but E/4 to I/2 instead looks OK. I will then need to pick up a few to replace those I move.
Any comments?

I think I'd put a 260 in E3, recheck and leave the rest alone. Look pretty close to me. 4-6 thousandths is right on.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

I'm sure some will disagree with me here, but this is how I have done Z1/KZ 900's for 30+ years.
rotate engine until cam lobe points directly away from valve, check clearance there.
I always try for .002-.004 on intakes and .003-.005 on exhaust.

works for me.... YMMV
:P

That is what I would have deduced as a practical technique; don't know why it would not work. However, as long as you either point the lobe straight up or use the sprocket marks, consistency I should think is the key.

I like it; a lot. Anybody got shims of 245,260,270 and a 280 all 29mm, plus 2 advanced technology, (rubber?, pure silicone?) valve cover gaskets ready to ship, like, tonight? Let me know how much and where to send check. I think if I can stay on task, I could be riding next weekend.
Today I connected with a local who owns a "06 Triumph Bonneville and I would not mind being seen on the road with her, tooling around at a easy pace.
