Seems like a fairly common problem.

Looks like the project is becoming unavoidable.

In reading through the FSM, it appears fairly straightforward.

But I don't have any special tools, and would prefer not to buy them, or even think about them, if the job can be done without them.

From what I recall, it seems the easiest way to do this thing while the engine is in the frame is to pull the exhaust and clutch pack, and then lay the bike down on its side.

Any ideas welcome.

RRRR, if you could point me/us in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it. I've searched the archives for onkelB's posts on starters and such but can't seem to find the correct one with pics. All help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Don't bother trying to do it without pulling the engine is my advice, but do it whichever way you think best.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

I think you might have entered an incomplete subject line into the search field - "starter" instead of "starter clutch". ;)

That being said, I checked and do actually have OnkelB's thread saved to my favs on the archived site:

i would vote for pulling the engine. i have done it both ways, and with the engine out it was just alot easier.

I just did my GPz750 starter clutch last week, with the engine in the frame. I used a large mirror on the ground to assist in removing/installing the parts, an old dog bed on the ground for comfort and a flashlight to see into the bottom end. Took me 3 hrs. Make sure have all the parts/gaskets available.

Hey y'all, thanks for the responses so far, but I still am confused about whether I need any special tools?

Impact gun I have.

Metric sockets I have.

Rachets and breaker bars. 1/2" and 3/8".

Metric allen wrenches.

I'm going to look at my service manual again. . .maybe I just didn't read it right.

you will need some circlip pliers. just hit the clutch basket nut with the rattle gun, was a 30mm nut on my 750. You will also need a big good screwdriver to take the retaining plate off the bearing that the fwd shaft is supported by and the screws that hold the oil pump in place, i found i had to use screwdriver tips on my ratchet with repeated hitting with a hammer to break the seal. make sure you use loctite when re-ssembling.
