Piston replacement was created by federal officer
Hi all, easy question i hope!!! i'm replacing the head on my 1979 kz-750B twin because its cracked. Will i be able to remove the cylinder at that point and replace the pistons while still in the frame??? I figured while its that far down i can buy a set brand new for $25.
thanks in advance.

Yes, you can remove the cylinder and replace the pistons without removing the motor from the frame.

Be sure and have the cylinder checked for wear before spending the money for new standard pistons.

I've always found it easier in the frame. I've heard that some people have even kept the original base gasket and cylinders in place when changing the head. I would probably pull it and replace the gasket just to be sure though. Might as well bore it one size up and get some new pistons. Might as well port the head and go with a little bigger cams too while you're in there. As long as money is no object, that is!:P

I am guessing you have new pistons and rings in your hand, if not ...........

1 if and I say if, they are going to be expensive, I got a set off flebay, and they were not cheap.

2 you are not going to find any aftermarket stuff either, I talked to jeff about it and he didnt have a line on them at the time

LoudFastandUgly has all standard and oversize piston kits for the KZ750 twin listed at $45 each.

You can send your cams in and get them reground at Web Cam (I think) for $280.00, but that's about it for aftermarket hot rod parts for the 750 twin.

I found a set on ebay,a new set,for 24$$ which i think is a good price. does burn oil and the motor has 45,000
miles on it. i guess i dont need to but having the motor torn down that far and being the pistons are so cheap i figures why not !!!

Way to go then, if you not boring to oversize, make sure you hone the barrels good so the new rings will seat.....hopefully
