underbucket shim advise
12 Sep 2007 20:32
Hi all,
I've just had done a valve job on my bike and now getting everything back together.
I've check my valve clearance and I have none and every valve. This is probably because of the valve job.
My question is since the shim are uneder the bucket, I need to remove the cam everytime to check back the valve...........
I'm going tomorow at the dealer to have a bunch of shim or at least the thinnest one to recheck the clearance and try to find the correct one.
Since have no clearance, is there a way the get the right shim once. I would like not to remove the cam 3 or 4 times to find out. I'm gettting pretty anxious with my cap bolt.....
Tks in advance everyone,
Joce

The head is on already.
Since this is a model with underbucket shim, it can't be bench shim. Maybe I'm wrong about this.

you can shim it on the bench but since you have it on that point is mute.......
I was going to suggest a way of clamping your cams while removing the cam caps so you won't strip out your cam cap bolt holes out....using a "quickgrip" clamp as you will be taking your cams out several times to get the shims right....
its in the archives, have a look it may help, you may beable to do it with the head installed...

Zip-tie the cam chain to the cams, through one of the bolt holes in both cams. I did the intake, then the exhaust this way without any issues. I loosened the tensioner 10mm bolts when lifting each cam,, then after I bolted the cam back in place, tightened the tensioner bolts. I then did the exhaust cam the same way. No need to remove the cams completely to replace/check shim thickness. Just make sure not to turn the engine over in this process.
Shims are $4.15 each through Z1 Enterprises.

Always bench shim a head that has had a new valve job.
If you end up having to tip the valves to get clearance, check out the other post on here that deals with preventing the shim from sitting too low in the retainer, causing the tappet to sit on the retainer rather than the shim.

In the claymer, it said that you can't tip the top of the valve when it is underbucket.
I'll do a few search over here then.

it may be cheeper to take it to the guy that did the valve job and have him re shim it. at $10 per shim it is expensive to do by trial till u get it.

I would probably bolt the cams in so they could see graphically what they did wrong.

Well good news!
Whent to the dealer today and have eight 2.00m shims which are the thinnest available.
Put everything in and had clearance everywhere so was able to have the good measurement.
Next step is to go back to the dealer and swap the shims with the correct one and I'm done for that.
What a relief beleive me!
Thanks everyone for your good advise.
Still got two other project so those advise will help for sure!

That's good news. For the record, you can tip valves in sob applications. Do it all the time.
