Which Compression Tester? was created by Thistle
Hi All.
I moved to the US from Scotland about 6 years ago and have finally started to re-tool my workbench! I am not always familiar with the tool manufacturers in US and also not always sure where to buy (but Google helps out there).
What recommendations do you guys make for compression testers? For an amateur like me, should I get the $24 set from Sears or is it worth spending more money. And if so, what does everyone recommend?
Thanks,
Dave.

Get a "Leak Down" tester instead. A "much better" diagnostic tool

I'm a mechanic so I use my Snap On compression tester which "was" $75 years ago. It has a detacable gauge which leaves a connection for an air hose which also makes it a leak down tester. Cool, huh? But to answer your question, a "leak down tester" is good but I prefer a standard compression gauge. Yes you can use the Sears gauge. After getting a reading, if it's low you can squirt some oil in the cylinder and if it goes up it means your rings are weak. If no change it means you have a valve problem, which could just be a valve adjustment. Good luck..
