I only use CASTROL in all my motors. And in 34 years of driving and racing I've NEVER had a bearing or oil related problem. But others may hate Castrol..

i back up the castrol. i have used castrol gtx 20-50 for about 15 years now with no problems. my last oil change went to the shell rotella. i couldnt get it out quick enough. first of all it made my engine ping knock clatter if a inline 4 can make a noise it made it. secondly on start up my oil light flashed no matter how long it idiled, it would flash until i rode a mile or two. went back to castrol no more noise no oil light. im by no means an expert but if an engine is making noise then in my mind the oil isnt doing its job! by the way when i get my pistons in and my gasket kit installed im thinking about maybe trying some of the lucas m/c oils. any thoughts?

I run Castrol GTX 20-50 and a bottle of STP oil treatment in the red bottle in my KZ900 and my Z2. No problems. It holds up to the scorching desert temps. I just change it more often................markerdown

I've told my story of Castrol here before so I won't repeat the entire thing, but just a short recap. I used Castrol since my KZ650 was new and I'd do the routine valve checks ect, and all was clean as can be. Then all of a sudden I started seeing sludge building up on the cam cover ect, then all of a sudden my oil was all sludge and would not even drain out of the engine. Yes, believe it or not I removed the drain and it would not drain! I changed oil every 2000 miles since new. Yes the engine was tired to put it mildly, but I won't run Castrol anymore after that. I've had no problems running Rotella in the KZs ever since that time. I think Castrol changed their formula along the line somewhere in the SA-SJ rating system. I still have Castrol in the old SG rating and I would trust it, but not the new stuff. Like I said this is all conjecture on my part, but I would think a worn engine would build up sludge gradually, not go from zero to 100% over the course of probably less than 6000 miles.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Oh no, not the oil topic again! :pinch:

lol! :P :woohoo:

Add another to the "I use Castrol" list.

Been running Castrol GTX 20w50 year-round in all of our vehicles:
'78 KZ650, '84 ZN700, '96 VN750, '86 Trooper II (4 cyl), '94 Toyota 4x4 (POS V6:angry:) and '95 Jeep Grand Cherokee (straight-6).
With the way I ride/drive and our warm weather, they need the 20w50.

On the bikes, I drain about a quart of oil out and add a can of Seafoam to the oil about 100 miles before I do an oil and filter change.
It seems to be keeping things from gumming up, and also prevents the oil windows on them from building up that nasty film and making them unreadable.
I'm going to start doing the same thing with our cages as well. :)

Until recently I have always used Castrol 10W40 with great success. However, I have read numerous articles about passenger car oils having reduced the zinc and phosphorus levels in their products because of emission system concerns. This has lead to the destruction or increased wear on cams in many high performance engines that use solid lifters. So, being the cautious type, I have switched to Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10W40 oil. It has higher zinc/phosphorus levels than car oils along with other properties that would seem to benefit KZ engines. (see links below). I've been using it for 1,000 miles now with good results (no leaks, clutch slip, smoke, etc. although I didn't have those problems with Castrol either.) My bike even seems to run a little smoother, but that's probably all in my head resulting from the cost of the oil.

Another vote for Castrol 20W-50. Never a problem and you can't beat the price at Wallyworld. Change it frequently and don't use those "orange" filters. B)

I changed my KZ900 to 10W-40 Ams oil in 1980 and never looked back. Today I run it in every engine that I care about. I even drain it out of my bikes and put it back into my lawnmowers.

Every bike I have runs smoother, shifts easier and quieter and runs stronger with Ams Oil. I have no doubt that the other synthetics aren't as good. I just stick with what I know.

Brad Penn racing oil for me 20-50 . Lots of zddp. However, really my thought is pick your oil and change it often. It's hard to believe that most oils wouldn't be light years ahead of the oils that were available in the 70's and 80's. If you're really concerned about it, start doing UOA's at each oil change.
