so these kids keep riding by my house with their shiny new crotch rockets, and makes me want one. well not really the bikes, but the exhaust systems. the "noise" just sounds so good to me, but the ride is so uncomfortable.
Is there any way to mount a new style system to a 78 kz650. I've searched the board, and all can find is that a zr-7s system will match up to a kz700.
any help from anybody is helpful. I probably will end up going back to stock after I have my fun with it, so no need to flame me for messing with her;)

thank you Gringo. funny thing, I looked at that thread earlier to find out what takeoff shocks I could use, because mine are shot, and my back lets me know every day.
If I understand correctly, it's a direct bolt-on , but I don't know what split keepers are. I think I should be able to fab some sort of mounting bracket. And is it possible to keep the passenger pegs?
do zr-7's and zx-7's have the same set-up? I'm sure I can find a wrecked Ninja around here somewhere.
this has me very excited:woohoo:

Hi Genesis,

Don't buy a ZX-7 exhaust because it won't fit... The engine is completely different!

The ZR-7 engine is basically the same as the old 650's and 750's! I put a ZR-7 exhaust on my KZ700 without too much trouble.
I was also lucky enough to find a decent Remus muffler, so it sound really cool now!

Follow the link in my signature and you will find a link to a youtube clip I made from the sound of the exhaust.

KZ700-A1 (1984)
525 chain conversion; Dyna 2,2 ohm coils; Taylor plugwires; Stainless steel ZR-7 exhaust ; Remus muffler.
Plans: GPZ cams, ported head, 17 inch wheels, EFI....

Genesis on your bike the pegs as well as the centerstand will still work with the ZR7 exhaust. The split keepers are the 8 little metal pieces that fit between the exhaust pipe and the exhaust flange. The keepers from your 650 will be too long so just order a new set of 8 from the dealer, they only cost $3 each or maybe whomever you buy the exhaust from will include them with it. As Paling1 already pointed out the ZX7 system is different and won't work. I like the fact that the system is stainless and won't rust out and I also like the quiet. The looks....well it took a while but it kind of grows on you. It is a big departure from stock.
