Are you talking about the bottom pan or an
entire engine splitting?

It's just a simple unbolt, replace gasket and put it back together. However for a gasket to just start leaking one day is doubtful. If you've determined it's the gasket, that's fine, but if you haven't fully investigated, you'd better. Usually rubber orings leak, and there are a couple close to that area if you're talking about the KZ650 anyway. On a thousand I don't know.

If I understand which cover (inner countershaft sprocket cover?) then it is more likely that one of the seals is leaking. Shift shaft seal? Clutch pushrod seal? Etc.

Its on the kz1000. So if its a seal i am assuming the cases need splitting?? Or can i change the orings without splitting the cases?

WG you are correct about which cover.

That gasket for the shift cover is currently leaking on my 1000 also but since it is so small I am not worried about it. I had to fix that same problem on my 650 already. The seals are good. When I changed the gasket I took out as much oil as not to cause the oil not to over flow out and took off the sprocket cover and sprocket... and shift lever also and there are just a couple of screws and its off and on within a hour or 2, thats with removing the old gasket.

So once you removed the cover the seals are accessable right? I am going to change them as a matter of course since i dont want to find out they are leaking once i replace the gasket. Thanks for the info. I had to remove the front sprocket anyway since i am doing a 530 conversion so this may just work out as one large project.

Just FYI, the cover you're talking about is the mission cover.

Mission cover sounds so "harleyesque"... countershaft sprocket cover sounds more metric... same deal. Seals are in the cover. It takes 10 minutes to get the cover off. Use the correct drivers to punch old seals out and then put a little grease on the edge when sliding the new seals in place to seat them before driving them into place. I don't use seal drivers but use a socket out of my impact set for driving case seals.
