please clue me into the 550 trans conversion
10 Aug 2007 07:46
i asked this question. in my clutch spring but decided maybe i should start a new post for this topic. six gears:evil:. let me hit my 150hp mark with a 6th gear:evil: might just provoke me to go ahead and buy that draw thru turbo from my mech. produces 22lbs of boost on his bike! with an intercooler so its streetable might get 25lbs. oh hell here i go again time to start a new topic. really thou any advice on the trans corversion would really help.

If you plan on putting s turbo on the motor and making lot's of ponies, then I wouldn't use the 550 trans.
There is a fixed amount of space on the two transmission shafts, so the only way to add another gear to each shaft is to make all the gears thinner.
Do you really want to increase the power by that much and use thinner trans gears???
A few phrases come to mind.
Recipe for disaster.
Ticking time bomb.
Grenade with the pin pulled.
Etc.

I don't know for a fact that it will work in the 650 cases, but I think it would work in the later, non kickstart models.
I do know for a fact that the 550 trans will work in the GPz750 cases, and the KZ750 cases are virtually identical.
And the 550 gears are noticeably thinner

Oh yes, been there, done that!
Seriously its a great project to do and works well.
Make sure the 550 tranny is in good shape. In particular ensure that the gear dogs aren't worn as it will cause the gears to jump out, usually at high revs.
As Steell says I seriously doubt that it will work with 150hp without going bang pretty quickly.
Sadly I no longer have it as I went and fitted a GPz750 Turbo engine which uses a different transmission altogether.

KB Saturn fitted with a stock GPz750 turbo engine. Loads to do on this project.
