valve clearances

Hey fellas,I am new to site but not Kawi's and I couldn't find the answer I was looking for in the search.I am going thru my 85' ZL900 to get it back on the road(hasn't been since 92')and have a question about setting valves.Does it matter where in the specified range that they are set or is it better to be on the loose side or tight side? These are screw adjusted so it's easy to get.Now I have them pretty much in the middle of the range. Thanks

Since valve clearance decreases as the seats wear, it makes sense to set the clearances are wide as allowable to maximize the time between adjustments.

How much "drag" should there be on the feeler gauge when checking clearance?

If you can pull the feeler gauge through the clearance, it is likely the correct feeler gauge. There should be some "drag" as you call it since if there isn't, you are using the wrong size feeler gauge... If it pulls through HARD, that is really OK as the difference between that size feeler gauge and the next skinnier one is likely to produce NO DRAG which means the skinnier gauge is too thin.
