Need clutch help, please.......
23 Jul 2007 17:15
OK....
So after sitting for awhile (o.k....a way-to-long while), I cannot get the clutch to release. In other words, pull clutch lever in while engine running in neutral, put in 1st and boom.....dead.....just like clutch is engaged all the time.
So I work the lever lots of times, thinking maybe plates or discs stuck.....same thing. Break out the manual, adjust the screw, mid-length adjuster, and play at lever all per the book. No matter if I put excess play in or take ALL the play out......just wont disengage.
Oil been in awhile but isnt THAT bad looking....changing tomorrow after get filter.
Looking for something I might have missed or not thought of. All was fine when had it out last.....maybe month or so ago. Feel free to point out might oversights or offer suggestions. Thankie kindly...

Pat,
Have you checked the worm gear and the rest of the release mechanism behind the left engine cover where the clutch cable attaches yet?
I'm almost willing to bet that chain lube and road grime (and lack of use from sitting) are causing it to stick.
Should only take 5 or so mins to check.

I'll be sure to do that.
Remember to post up and let all of us know when you're able to fix your cable issue, and of course what was causing it.

Does the clutch lever feel normal, meaning you feel the clutch spring pressure when you pull in the lever? If it does than no adjustment or playing with the worm gear will solve that. Common for clutch plates to stick together and cause this problem. (Well not common, but it can happen). I was worried about this on all my bikes that sit anywhere from a year to ten years without being started. Some guys have been able to unstick the plates by putting the bike in gear, pulling in the lever and rock the motorcycle forward and back to try to break the plates loose or other methods of more vigor using engine power to try to break them loose. If all else fails it will mean disassembling the clutch plates manually.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

With my setup ,,,,
After a few days ,I can "rock" them free,,
After a few weeks I can use the running engine (warm the bike up ,shut it off,put it in 1st ,bump start it on an EMPTY street , pull in the clutch , bring the revs up and "chop" the throttle ,maybe a few times .
If that does not work ,pull the cover and soak the fiber plates in clean oil for a few mins then put it back together.
Be careful bump starting it ,,,,,,,
I just hit the button and mine goes when warm.

Thanks all......
After fresh oil, working the lever ALOT, and a bump start or two, all is well. This leads me to believe the plates were "sticking", as after another adjustment and road test, no slippage or binding or grabbing or anything of the sort.
Guess just goes to show ya, these babies are meant to be RIDDEN!!!!!

IF plate sticking is a constant problem ,you
may want to try a different motor oil.
