Help!!! Camshaft Bolt snapped off!!
22 Jul 2007 18:49
I was just getting done with my valve adjustment and started to put the camshaft bolt in and I put my torque wrench to 8.5 ft lbs (closest to 104 inch lbs on my torque wrench) and one of my bolt just snapped!!!
Well now I have half a bolt, and half still in the cylinder head. I don't know how I should go about getting it out without causing any damage so I can put a new one in??
Any help would be great!!

I take it that there is none of the bolt sticking out of the hole to catch with a pair of vice grips. The bolt shouldn't be very tight. I've had luck by just putting a small dab of jb weld on the very tip of a smaller bolt, letting it harden and backing the bolt back out. They do make a quicker setting jb now. If done carefully a dab of super glue will work too. I have seen other bolts that just using a small magnet will turn it out if loose enough and it is flush with the casting. Most hardware stores have metric bolts that you can replace it with.

the broken off piece is a ways down . . I don't think its very loose as I tried to just get a flat head screwdriver and see if I could apply some pressure and back it out, but no go on that.
What is jb? I am kind of new to this and this was my first valve adjustment and it has not turned out well so far . . I can only hope I do not run into any other problems.

If it's down in the hole forget the jbweld idea. Carefully drill with a smaller drill bit and back it out with an easy out. Any hardware store will have a kit with a drill and the easy out and also the bolt you need.

see if you can find an extractor set. I got one from snap-on that came with a great set of reversed drill bits. with some luck you can just back it out the the reverse drill bit. Extractors rarely work for me and breaking one of those off in there makes for a really bad day (like it wasnt bad enough already) but ive had good luck with the backwards drill bits. Don't know if you can get just the drill bits or where else you might find them. In the meantime keep spraying penetrating oil in the hole. Every day, few times a day. It will help if it is actually stuck due to some corrosion or something. I have read before that the steel bolts in the aluminum head causes some corrosion so it will probably be a good idea to spray it good.

replace all the bolts with harder ones to avoid this happening again.

Ok now I need to know what you guys think . . .
I am looking for new bolts to replace all 16 of them as I do not trust the old ones now.
The bolts are 6mm by 38mm and they are grade 8 steel.
The closest I have been able to find is 6mm by 35mm long so it would be 3mm shorter.
Do you think it would make a difference to have a bolt 3mm shorter????

If you can't get the bolt at an auto supply, go to a cat dealer they have great selection, and don't care what your grade 8 bolt is going in. pick up some anti sieze, while you're there money well spent.
