List Your bike in Your signature,Bud,so We all know what bike You're referring to.Also,Someone close to You might have a spare nut that They'd part with.(that didn't sound right, lol)
Speaking from experience...if the nut came loose, then the locking washer in behind the nut has probably been fatigued, and IT is probably the cause of the nut letting go.The small tab on the washer that inserts into the hole in the countershaft sprocket may have snapped off,if there was any play in the nut.The lock washer is meant to have an edge bent away from the surface of the sprocket, over and locked against an edge of the nut(once the nut is tightened). If You've changed the sprocket,or just removed the assembly, then that bent section of the washer will weaken from stress, and when it lets go,then the nut WILL loosen, from direction of engine torque.
You're best off to put on a new lock washer when You do put it back together.
Jeff has them at Z1...not too sure on the nut though, and it also depends on Your bike.

Jeff has the lock washer, but NOT the nut. He says he could track some down but it would take several days, then the time for shipping. I know this cause I just inquired about one.
