oil filter bolt order...??? Bolt, cover, cup, washer, filter, spring?
18 Jul 2007 09:26
Changed my oil yesterday.
I found a spring in my oil drain pan that looked like it came from somewhere.
I put it back like this -
Oil bolt -> Cover -> "Cup" -> Washer -> Filter, then the spring on top.
Is that correct? I've driven around the block like this, will that damage it?

You're going to need to redo it. It goes bolt-cover-cup-spring-washer-filter
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Sounds like you need to go back and do it over, correctly.
The picture shows the spring UNDER the filter, pushing it up.
lookyme
You drive it around like that, you won't need someone to tell you that it will damage it. You will find that out for yourself.

Although assembled incorrectly, it really wouldn't matter in the filtering. The pump pumps the oil up out of the sump through the holes in the oil filter bolt, through the filter into the rest of the engine. Whether the filter is pushed up by the spring or down would have little if any effect on the actual fitering process. I know Z1 enterprises says if the spring is missing the filter will be bypassed, but if you look at the design and how filtering is done, this is not true.
