While were on this subject, 82 kz550 motor is extremely pitted and rough looking. Looks like calcium deposits. Tried to just get it off with soap and water didnt work, simple green worked a little better, but when dried came right back but not as bad. (and i know not to get it on the rubber parts). The fins in the cylinder head are also covered with these deposits and wondering how to get them off? Oh, and instead of steel wool, i used a "dobie" pad, good for non stick cookware.

i use an old toothbrush and mothers to get into those hard to reach fins and other areas of my motor.

I've always had good luck just applying a coat of wax on the covers after I polish them. It keeps them from oxidizing for a long time. Never cared for clear coat but that's just me.
