Anybody tried a webcam on GPZ750/650?
13 Jul 2007 14:05
Hello, anybody tried any of the webcam options on their GPZ750/650. I just found out that the camshaft used in the 1982 GPZ750 is the same as the normal 750 camshaft except it doesn't have the gear for the tach (grrr....) but I'm thinking I can make the best of the situation with a WEBCAM camshaft.
Anybody used them in this application and can vouch for their performance? Anybody know what they charge for a weld hardened job?

BTW if you've been following the build saga at all the important point here is to get a GPZ750 camshaft from the 83 on aircooled engines because they will deliver more power.
The difference between the KZ750 & the 1982 GPZ750 head is simply a different combustion chamber and polished intact tracts.

I used their "Road race" grind and was not happy with it. All the power was made up high and I could never get the engine to run right at idle. The cams made the bike undrivable for the street.
I sold them and installed the GPZ750 cams. I have been happy with them.
I suppose if I had bought their more mild grind it would have worked out but I didn't think a road race grind would have been that aggressive of a cam.

I hear in a lot of situations people almost always over cam. So my sugestion is to 471-00, or if you know a lot about engine building and know exectly what you want go with the 471-70 and plan on playing with cam timing to get it dialed in to suit your needs. Your going to need a degree wheel to time the cam properly or if you are good with math set them yourself with out a wheel.

Awefully expensive camshafts, for that price I might be better off looking for GPZ cams from 83 on (I have 82 GPZ cams in my possession right now, the only problem is that they are the exact same as the KZ750 cams I already got!)
I bet that I can find a set of 83-on GPz cams for 100 or less and then that $288 would go better towards weight savings/suspension
If I'm not happy with the power I can always change out the cams.
Disappointed, but thanks for your responses.

Hey Peter - The Gpz cams I have in my 650/810 really come alive in the higher rpm range. In fact they almost feel like they have a linear powerband once they get up above 7 grand or so (I am only guessing since my tach is no longer functional.) I would like to have the tach working to see where this combination pulls the strongest as last year with the Kz750 cams in my 810 I regularily had the motor winding up past 10 grand and it was still pulling.
In my opinion you shouldn't be disappointed with the Gpz cams with respect to the power/dollar ratio.
