Aluminum Putty

Recently, I've had the shifter pivot on my case break off, and oil will leak out through the shift shaft. The only cure for this is to replace the case. Both cases need to be matched, so I'd either replacet them or try a repair first.

Here's the before with the broken shift support piece:

This stuff works great. :woohoo:

Here's the after-picture of my over-puttying after letting it sit overnight.

Word is after letting it set up, it can be machined almost like a metal.

Giving it a try, and I'll see if it's held oil in the engine overnight, otherwise I'll have a big mess. :(

Give it a try. It's worth the money spent.

The Devcon is good "epoxy". That's what it is really. I used it years ago and after dry you can sand it smooth and it sands and acts exactly like JB Weld which is also very good. They make this stuff all sound like it drys like metal, but it doesn't as it's still just a variation of epoxy. Works good for many things though. Good luck, what a strange thing to have break it seems like.

Isn't there supposed to be an oil seal or maybe an o-ring at that area?

OKC_Kent,
The cover that bolts over that shift shaft has 2 seals on it. One for the shift shaft and the other for the crank shaft.

Does anyone know how it stands up to heat? The reason I ask...is that I have an exhaust baffle that has broken on my KZP. Althought the exhaust is steel, I'm willing to try anything that will keep it from vibrating while riding. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I've used JB Weld on exhaust before and never had a problem. In a pinch, you could consider using some exhaust bandage but it might be worthwhile to clean it really well and try some high temperature brazing as a temporary cure. You could easily get the proper equipment for around $30-40.

I do all my exahust welding with a flux core mig. If you turn the heat down at it lowest setting and the wire feed you can weld really thin steel if you do a series of many tacks.

Devcon is the epoxy used in ported cylinder heads to build up port floors or reinforce ports that have been extensively altered. So, yes it will work in high heat applications.
