I sent mine in to Falicon for welding and balancing.
My motor was much smoother afterward.

I sent mine to our friends at APE over in the earthquake/fire/flood/tsunami-prone state to the west (and bought a crapload of shiny things at the same time).

Z1?! Your username says MkII.

I'm aware of Falicon and APE...looking for local talent if poss to avoid freight which will cost more than the actual work but may have to go that route anyway.

right, 79 MkII was my honey I had to part with 20 years ago when I relocated to Phx. I had a 75 Z1B prior to that. I always wanted to get another KZ after getting back into bikes 13 years ago after turning 25 and affording the ins. premiums here.... found a decent 1977 1000A and going thru it soup to nuts.

TJ at Eastside Performance is the local old kaw guy.

343 S Davis
Mesa, AZ 85210

He's had his shop forever and really knows these bikes. Don't just call him though, take a ride over to his shop lots of immaculately restored Z's , KZ's , Enfields, an Indian and a Harley that makes like 260 horsepower or something insane like that. I'm sure he does the work, but if he doesn't he will know where to point you.

Make sure you check out the KZ900 he just did for his wife. That bike is amazing.

Good luck.

Be sure whoever you get to do it, has the rod to check and make sure it is not twisted before they weld it.

The rod in question is a 17mm drill blank - a nice, straight rod... If you can fit the rod in the 17mm holes in all four rods where the piston pins normally go, the crank will be a straight one. The holes are VERY tight and you may have to grease the rod up a tad. I think you can get the rods from McMaster-Carr or whatever that tool place is called. I think that is where I got mine. I also think that scientific folks call this "indexing the crank" but I might be mixed up on that fact...

thanks for the info Austin...... so fit the 17mm rod thru the small end on all four con rods at the same time then that tells you there is no twist in the crank..makes sense. sounds like this local shop should be able to handle it, if not off to APE it goes.
