Early KZ1000 or J head? was created by smd
Any experts out there who can identify this head from ebay photos? My guess is that it's the earlier type of head, but I'm not sure, and the seller evidently doesn't know. Thanks.

Don't the words "this head" show up as a link? Maybe it didn't work. Here:

It looks like a KZ900 head - the exhaust stud appears to be 6mm not 8mm - whatever, it's not a J head. So it's be a fit for a Z1 900 thru 1980 KZ1000

Yep 900. Probably has cracks from the exhaust seats to the spark plug holes.

Can't beat it for the price. If it is complete junk then you are only out $38. I see a cam cap bolt missing. Maybe it is just missing or maybe it is stripped. I would count on installing a few helicoils, blasting the carbon of the pockets. At least that way you would not be disappointed if it needed work. It might be ready to bolt on. You just never know.

The head ain't a J and it ain't a 79/80... Jeff's eyes are better than mine on the stud size... I can't really tell if they are 6mm or 8mm but if they are 6mm like Jeff thinks, the head likely isn't a Z1 head as they were black for the first couple years. The 79/80 head have the holes running down to the exhaust port runners for reburn of goop.

The cam caps tell you it's not a 73 or 74 head - those caps are 'ribbed' and these in the picture are not. The studs are certainly 6mm - so it's either a late Z1 or KZ900 head. The shape of the fins looks more like late Z1 style than KZ900. The KZ900 fins tended to be more 'knife-edged'. I'd say it's a 75 Z1B head.

Also, there are no castings in the intake area for the vacuum take-offs that you'd see on the earlier Z1 heads.
