750 twin shifter seal leak was created by Wildh2oskier
Hi my '83 750 twin has developed a leak around the seal on the shifter. My question is do I need to pull it down to change it or can I just remove and reinstall without pulling the cases apart?
Thanks.

No you don't have to split the cases. You have to remove the countershaft sprocket and then the "Mission Cover". The shift shaft seal is carried in the mission cover.

I wouldn't doubt that you could pull the seal without even removing the mission cover if you drilled the seal carefully and used a sheet metal screw to pull out the seal.

The mission cover is part num 14025A and the shift seal is part num 92049C.

Hope this helps

This diagram might be better, it's actually for an 83 750 twin.

92049B is the shifter seal.

You're right Steve. I should have looked at the cylinder head diagram to see that it was a four. You still don't have to split the cases to get it done but your drawing implies that the seal is driven in from the interior so it may be necessary to pull that cover to get at it.

You're correct Bill, the cover should come off to replace that seal. At least I did it that way and seated the replacement seals from the back of the cover. A bit of advice, Wild, IMO since you are already tearing into that area, you might want to replace all the seals and gaskets in that area. No sense replacing one, putting it back together and a few miles down the road you need to get in there again. Also, since you will have the drive sprocket off, it might be a good time to think about replacing the sprockets and chain, if needed or marginal.

I appreciate all the replies. My shop manual has managed to dissapear so the parts #s and diagrams were extremely helpful. The only thing is it is a belt driven not a chain. Will that have any bearing on the seals part number? I'm planing on doing a good teardown and replace gaskets and seals in the winter so I may just quick fix it till then. sI have planned a couple of trips down to the gulf coast, then (hopefully) up to Deals Gap and riding the Trail of Tears on it this year. So I'm not wanting to start any major teardowns on it till around Nov.

The pic I posted is for the 83 KZ750 Belt.
When you stated it was an 83 750 twin, that eliminates everything but the KZ750 Belt, because that was the only 750 twin model in 83 (83-84 in Canada)
