I have the top end apart and I am working out new shims for my valve clearance. I have a clearance of .004" with 275 shim and spec clearance is 0.28". This is on the 1000. Can someone give me a example of how to work this out?

I think you're figuring something wrong Matthew. Generally the clearance you want is about .10mm (.004")- .15mm (.006"). You definately do not want .28" as that is more than 1/4". If you are measuring .004", that's pretty good or you could go to a 270 and be at about .006". I doubt they would call for more clearance than that although I haven't had a bike as "new" as yours for 24 yrs.

My bad, I was reading the spark plug gap measurements! Sorry and thanks Ron! So that means I only have 2 below spec. One is .0025" and the other I didn't have a leaf small enough but the bucket spins. What size shim would I need for that if I have a 280 shim on there now and i need at least .003- .007 spacing?

If it spins and you've got a 280, a 270 ought to get you perty close.

To start with ,,,,,,,,
YOU NEED to think METRIC .
Spend the $8.00 to buy a set of metric feeler gauges.(marked with both)

And there are charts posted all over the place with the (? shim change factor ?)

I have examples of how to do the computing on the 903/1015cc Valve Clearances write up on our website. As has been suggested, buy a set of metric feeler gauges. It is much easier to get a feel for shimming with the metric gauges since the shims are metric...
