odd solutions for old bike problems
13 Jun 2007 08:56
Crazy thing happened.
I just picked up an old bike and am learnign as I go.
My 1980 KZ 440 refused to go more than about 10 miles without losing power and overheating.
I posted here and got some ideas as to what might be going on.
I was preparing to break down and have a go at the valves and whatnot. I also ordered a new set of gaskets. because I had some leakage.
Anyway, I was draining fluids and when I got to the oil, I drained about a quart more than should have been in there.
I put in a new filter and refilled with the correct amount of oil and have had no problems since.
So, my question to you- Did I do any major damage by running it a couple days with the extra oil before I figured out the problem and put in the right amount?

Did the oil smell like gas when you drained it? It so you are running to rich or the carbs are leaking into the cylinders when not running. Other than that if it is running ok now, I wouldn't worry about it having too much oil before.

Well as it goes,to little oil, you will overheat as there is barely any oil for the pump to constantly pickup. Too much oil can also cause overheating, as it causes alot of bubbles in the oil and therefore alot of open unlubricated spots and will cause air in the oil galleys like air in your break lines when you get them, causing overheating also. Did your oil light even blink?
