Oil Pan Cover Gasket Question
10 Jun 2007 19:23
Hi, I'm new to kzrider.com and I want to start by mentioning what a great and helpful site this is. I've been looking through the forum for a few days now collecting all kinds of useful information. I know there are a few topics with methods on how to fix a stripped oil plug already, and most of them seem to involve removing the oil pan cover. My question specifically is if it is necessary to replace the oil pan cover gasket before attaching it again to the bike or can it be reused. The reason I am asking is because I plan to remove the oil pan cover and take it to a machine shop to be drilled and retapped. If this is a ridiculous question I apologize in advance.

Welcome to KZr AlexV.
Remember, there's no such thing as a silly question, only silly answers.
Keeping that in mind, here's MY answer:
You'll get about a 50~50 take on this one.
Some members have repeatedly re-used their oil pan gasket without a single leak, while others have replaced the gasket anytime they remove the oil pan.
My personal opinion is that for the measley cost (about $16) for a new oil pan gasket, it's well worth the added security of not having to yank the entire exhaust system (which needs to be removed to properly remove the pan) and oil pan off again to replace the gasket IF it does leak.

Just remember, when you have the oil pan off, you can look inside and hope not to see any metal shavings.
This is something we all like to see....nothing but oil.
Oh welcome, and replace that gasket.

tracking it down will be fairly easy. Have you looked at Z1 enterprises web page?

Thanks, I don't see it under the available parts for my bike but I'll give them a call tomorrow. I found a lot of other parts that I was looking for here also, lol.

Re: Oil Pan Cover Gasket Question

I goofed bud, the auction link I posted is for the oil pan gasket to fit the 650's/750's....sorry! :S
I do recall seeing a gasket for a 550 on eBay last week though. I did a quick check just now and couldn't find it again, so it's either buried in there somewhere, or the auction ended already. Maybe if you were to do a more thorough search you might be able to locate it.
FWIW, Z1 enterprises shows as not carrying that gasket. But if you contact them, they just might be able to get one for you.
Here are the current and previous part numbers for the oil pan gasket for your bike:
Current number: 11061-1091
Previous numbers: 11009-1057, 11009-1272, and 11060-1057.
