Caveat Emptor
08 Jun 2007 08:17
I was curious, so I went to a linked E-bay auction:
cam caps
This doesn't make sense, so I wrote a question or two to the sellar:
The caps are line bored with the head, when the head is being manufactured.
Why would you sell the cam caps that are machined precisely off the head they are designed to work with, to anyone who might end up ruining a head they install them on, unless they get them machined to their application? Why not sell them the whole head, instead of ruining the value of the head you took the caps off of?
Maybe the buyers will get a clue.

The same thing with the crankshaft center bear cap! I've seen ads with the caps selling alone or the crankcase selling minus the cap.
Folks, be sure to buy these things as a set...

The crank center caps can be interchanged. Everyone does that.

I've changed cam caps over a couple of times. It's not usually a problem.

On the 550, I inherited a bunch of motor parts from a guy who mixed everything up. When I was sorting through the parts to match caps to heads, I found some were easily interchangeable, but some had a noticeable lip. I guess it's just a matter of luck on whether they can swap or not.
