Kooler Kontrol and Earl's...any info? was created by neilage66
There is a "Kooler Kontrol" on the oil cooler of my KZ1000. I found out it was patented in the late 70's by some California guys...the bike is an 1980. It apparently acts just like a thermostat in the cooling system of a car, except for the oil. It's attached to a pretty big cooler with red Earl's fittings. Earl's is still around and sold at places like Summit for example. Don't know if the cooler could be Earl's or Lockhart either?

Anyone hear of this brand / device?
What can you tell me?

I got 2 pics for ya. :)

Patent 4027643

Title:
Oil cooler control
Document Type and Number:
United States Patent 4027643
Link to this page:

Abstract:
An oil cooler control for the cooling of lubricating oil especially advantageous for engines of relatively low horsepower operating at relatively high R.P.M. makes use of a thermal responsive bypass valve device for altering the path of oil circulation over a cooling coil. The valve device has a valve chamber with a valve seat intermediate opposite ends and a valve element cooperates with the seat in response to a thermal drive element. When the oil is cool most of the oil is passed from the engine through the chamber and directly back to the engine. As the oil temperature increases the valve element is seated causing the oil to be passed through a cooling coil and then back to the engine.

Oil thermostats for oil coolers are pretty common and readily available, just search on Google and you will find a good selection of them.

I don't know anything about the one pictured though.

Look at the pics in this German forum:
click

there are som pics of oilthermostats. Racimex and Mocal are the brands. The Racimex looks a lot like the 'Kooler Kontrol'.

One of the big advantages is a faster warmup of the oil, which is usefull if you regularly drive short distances.
