swapping a '78 kz750 engine into a '82 kz750 CSR anything to look out for? was created by Jornum1
Hello all. as some may know I am in the process of building a project bike out of a 78 kz750.
kzrider.com/component/option,com_joomlab.../catid,11/id,134746/
I am far from done, so I acquired a 82 Kz750 CSR from my brother in law for free.
Lets just say it needs some work!
First off, carbs need to be rebuilt, head gasket needs to be replaced, and it leaks oil from the shifter.
So I want to pull it out and put my 78 750 in for now. Just so I have something to ride
If I swap the engine, carbs, and wiring harness in from the 78, everything should work fine, correct? I will use the hand controls from the 78 also, so I dont have to play with the wiring.
This will just be temporary till I rebuild the CSR.
Can anyone think of any problems I might have?
will it fit in the mounts ok?
Thanks in advance,
Jay

The '78s a twin where as the '82 is a 4 cylinder, so mounting will be needing modifications, if it's even feasible. Anything can be done though.
Just read your other post, so I see you up to the challenge.

It should fit and dont think you will need to change wire harness either just swap the 82 electrnic ignition in to the 78 engine then wire up the box ,, Not really that hard to do ,, Even the charging system is the same so it all should be a plug and play , You might want to use the 82 carbs do to the choke lever and air box connectors ,, You will need to swap the carb boots if you do ??

I, for one, forbid you from doing that.
Now, strike that thought from your mind, and get back to work on one of the coolest twins we'll see around here.

Sorry I did not mention the '82 CSR is a twin also.
I also didnt mention I am using the 78's gas tank for now. the 82's is chipped and rusted. I am going to repaint it.
I was going to swap the wiring harness, because the 82's is in very bad condition. The 78's is very clean.
With my project I am using a custom harness.
My concern is the block mounting the frame without any mods. I am going to put the original engine in after a rebuild, and paint.

Dont worry, Biquetoast
I have every intention of finishing my project up. Its just going to take a while for me to find the time to work on it. I dont want to rush it, and am in desperate need to ride, NOW!
I really want to do it right, so with everything I am realistically looking at next year to finish it up.

I just put an 82 750 CSR twin motor in my 79
The motor will bolt straight in with no problems with mounts.
Might want to use the timing advancer and ignition pickup off the 82 though,
that way it will plug into the 82 harness.
If you are going to use the 78 harness, I'd still use the
electronic ignition.

The 82 ignition will swap right into the 78? That would be nice to use the electronic ignition.
Thanks steell
