Kicking back sometimes
31 May 2007 19:44
Maybe someone might be able to help me with this...I have been using my kickstart in the last few weeks, as my battery is getting bad and wont start my bike most of the time, and every say third kick, the engine kicks back... I checked the timing, it was right on,I also just checked valve clearances and they were all good and the bike runs well once it gets going...Should I advance or retard the timing a little to make it a little easier to kick over and get it to stop kicking back?

I'd bet you need to retard the spark to help with that. But I'm not sure you want to do so unless it's set too far ahead any way.
My Indian has a control to retard the spark for starting. Once it starts you twist it back to the normal advance for running.
Good Luck

When you installed the 1045 kit the compression increased. Now the burn is faster and you need to back off the timing some. The top end power is junk with it set to the factory spec. The bottom is good and strong but vibration sets in as the dynamic comp. picks up with rpm. I was always changing the timing and one day my biker friend Animal said he wanted to start my bike with his hand. He didn't know the cap nut on the brake shaft was off and the timing was too advanced. It kicked back and caught his hand on the sharp threads, He looked me straight in the eye and held up his hand, man what a wicked cut on his palm. Right to the hospital he went and blamed me for the timing being off. I blamed me for leaving that nut off for months.

Thanks for the reply's, the timing adavancer is working as I just checked my timing with a strobe last week. My compression is about 160 across the board so she is a little harder to kick over then it used to be for sure.
I will retard the timing some and see if that makes a difference...How much should I set it back?? Say the width of the timing mark or two?? Has anybody fiqured out a linear measurement on the timing plate that would equate to degrees of rotation???
Thanks

I'd back it down a little more than that to start with.

sounds right to me. the cranks turning clockwise and the pickups go off of the crank so clockwise retards and counter advances. had some trouble with mine as well. took a 12 volt test light and static tested to get her close. that and new plugs runnig better now.
