650B has single front disc brakes with rear drum and spoke wheels instead of the C's dual front/single rear disc with mags. The D models are the SR models which don't have the rear duck bill tail section and have a different tank style and side covers than the B and C's. Different years received different model designations and I'm not familiar with those past the D model.
B models were made from 77-79 (if I'm remembering correctly).

None were inferior my boy, none at all.

I guess the B is the standard no frills model. C is one up the ladder, D is about equal to C, just a different look.

All shared the same engine, so no difference there. The SR (D model) has crossed pipes which feed 1 and 4 exhaust to the right and 2 and 3 to the left. There is some debate about what this did, alter the sound and I'm not at my FSM, but I seem to recall the SR having a couple horsepower less than the other and a flatter torque curve.

A lot of parts interchange between the models until the frame and body work and then the D has different pieces. Interestingly, the tanks will interchange.

A lot of 650s were brought and built here and parts have been plentiful. But that's changing as a couple of front master brake cylinder parts for the SR have been discontinued (fortunately, I didn't need them). So, in the future some alternatives may be necessary.

The SR (D model) or C models have a better brake system than my B model (but with a cross drilled rotor on the front of the B I've had NO issues with stopping power), but other than that you'll be hard pressed to make any claims of superiority between models. It all ends up being which you prefer visually (in my case I love the classic look of the spoked wheels on the B model, so I compensated for the braking system with a little upgrade).

one more thing? Is there an aftermarket exhaust that just make these things sound ultra tough?

There are several aftermarket exhausts that sound awesome. I've got the Mac 4-1 running w/ no baffle on mine and it sounds freaking amazing. Warning though, if you pull the baffle your neighbors WILL hate you!
Vance and Hines make an aftermarket as well as several other companies. Pretty well any 4-1 exhaust system will make these 650's purr, and if you pull the baffles out of the pipe that purr turns into a beastial roar!
