I would like to change the exhaust system on my 78 kz650 sr. What works? what sounds good? any help would be appreciated thaks

It all depends on what sound/performance you're looking for, what's actually available, and of course what you can afford.

Keep this in mind, the KZ750-4 motors are basically the same as far as exhaust port spacing and size are concerned. The most you might have to do is fab/alter a bracket where the pipe(s) mount in the rear, and possible need to rejet the carbs to compensate for the increased exhaust flow with most aftermarket performance systems.
So don't limit yourself to searching for an exhaust system specifically for a KZ650. ;)

R4 has a good point, personally I'm a 4-1 fan. I have the classic Kerker pipe on my bike. Considering going back to stock pipes just for original look. Can't decide.... :S
