Oil Light On!!! was created by Joe
OK all this is my problem. I own an '81 KZ 550 A2 Standard and it runs good. Everythings cool! I'll run the crap out of it on the highway (65mph @ 5-6000rpm) or just on the road, and when its really hot, the oil light comes on. It turns off at about 2500rpm but when I hit a stop light and the rpm go back down, the light comes on. Light doesn't come on cold or warm. Only when its hot!

Checklist:
1. oil has been changed w/ filter
2. 10W 40 was used.
3. Right amount of oil added, and double checked.

What are my options?
Thanks,
Joe

My friend and I just got done rebuilding his '84 KZ700 which is now a 750 because it spun a rod bearing. We had this engine on and off like 10 times atleast. We got it running good the last time and the oil light was on when below 4k. We swapped the pump and then then light was on constantly. So thanks to some help from people on here we check the oil pressure release valve located on the inside of the oil pan and turns out everything inside of it was missing. We put a new valve on there and it's been running great the past day or two. I don't know if this could be your problem or not but I definately wouldn't run it until you get the problem fixed.

Maybe your oil thinning out at hi temps is the reason,(if that is possible, I'm just guessing) someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Since summer is here, switch over to 20w-50 and see if the light stays off. The heavy weight oil won't hurt it at all.

The guy who owned it before me said he tried the 20W-50 idea and it still did the same thing.

I have now opened up the engine and I have the pump out along with the relief valve. The relief valve seems to be ok, there the clip, spring and ball bearing in it. I checked its seating and everything seemed to be ok.

The pump was torn down and everything seems good. Checked with feelers and its good.

Is there something else I might be missing?
Thanks
Joe

It's hard to say what else might cause it. A couple of things you can do ithe pump back together without a gasket to tighten up the pump and add a washer to the relief valve to up the pressure before the valve opens.

Before you either go crazy looking for a problem you might NOT have .

Or KILL your engine .

1) Either put a known good remote test gage on it ,or
2) Replace the pressure sending unit .

And see what changes that shows , if any .

Good Luck

That exact thing used to happen on my 550. I changed the sending unit and that solved the problem.

the sending unit is what turns the light on in the guages, is located under left side counter shaft cover and should be a single wire blue with a red tracer going to it should be 2 sensors under there in that area the other is your nutral light switch

ok guys. I found the problem. The two inner rotors have too much play. They should not exceed .03mm. I can get a .05mm feeler in between the rotor and body. Replace the rotors and everything should be good.

My new problem: The pump gasket is no longer available. Does anyone know the thickness of those gaskets so I can make a new one?
Thanks,
Joe
