fuel tank cleaner?
24 May 2007 09:31
hi all,
this might not be in the right forum but it seemed the most appropriate overall to me. i've got a '79 kz400 that i am trying to fix up. it's been sitting in the garage for close to a year with a full tank of gas in it. last night i took off the tank and got all the old gas out of it. i can hear tiny little items in the tank when i shake it. it sounds like little pebbles are in there. there is some noticeable rust in the inside of the tank as well when you open the top with the key. should i do anything about this, and if so, what exactly? is there a cleaner i should use before i put fresh gas in?
thanks so much for the help!

Hi Guys,
Speaking as a member only!
I've got to say that phosphoric acid will take days to do what my system will do in a couple of hours. Additionally, my method doesn't require so much mechanical abrasion to get rid of the scale.

Very nice article you have there KZCSI.
I used Kreem on my older bike back in '89 or '90 and except for a little darkening due to age it’s still in good shape.
I do worry, ok wonder what happens when a Kreem job finally goes south. At that point I guess the tank would have to be split if you couldn't find another.

one gallon simple green.
fill dry tank with it.
add boiling water.
let set overnight.
empty tank.
smile.
only works on light rust.
not a sat open for ten years rusted tank.

The POR-15 people have a cycle tank repair kit that contains an extra chemical that is supposed to dissolve failed tank sealers (presumably Kreem).
Fourtoes, Simple Green is a non-toxic, biodegradable cleaner that works quite well on grease. Yes, it's green in color.
