Mine run over the valve cover. I was thought about running them under the engine but decided that they could easily be cut by a rock or some other debris.

That's exactly how I have Mine routed,btw.
I bought a 6 foot length of steel braided line(pre cut and packaged)...tested first with a standard line before cutting the S.B. line($$$),to check for length on each line,and the 6 foot length was a perfect match...nothing discarded.It was tight though,so You'll need at least 6 feet,if You want to route them under the tank.
