head gasket size?
21 May 2007 17:56
I am putting the head on my 76 900ltd and the metal rings on the head gasket are slightly smaller than the cylinders. Is that normal? Also is there a trick to getting the cam chain to catch on the bottom sprocket or am i doing something wrong?

You want the bike to be vertical, and not on the kick-stand,when You're trying to get the chain to catch the crank.

if the head gasket is sticking out into the cylinder, file/dremmel it to the right size
do you have a manual?

If this is a composite gasket with the
metal compression rings around the bores
do not mess with the ring part. You will
need an oversize gasket to match your bore.
Check your bore size and make sure you have
the right gasket.

Did your cylinders have a bore job you don't know about and you just happened to get the stock gasket? Check the size of the cylinders and look up the stock size to see what happened.

I bought a 900 gasket kit when i started the build and decided to go to a 1015 top end. I was told it would work but it did not look right so i am going to order a set of 77-78 kz1000 head gaskets
