Valve Clearances
20 May 2007 11:44
I was working on my bike yesterday, and everyone has told me to check my valve clearances. Okay, well what do I need to do to adjust the clearances?
How is it done? Does the cylinder head have to be removed?

You don't have to pull the head, just the valve cover (and cams if you end up having to adjust any of the shims). Check the clearance between the cam lobes and shim buckets with a feeler gauge. If you end up needing to do any shim swapping, you'll have to pull the cams and use a magnet to pull the shim buckets up and change the shim size either up or down (whatever you need on that valve). It can get to be a bit of a process because you have to rotate the cams so that the lobe isn't sitting on the valve to check each one, and then you have to get a hold of all the proper shims.
If you don't have a Clymer's manual or factory shop manual you'll definitely want to get one.
