leaking head gasket was created by BarMan
hello everyone,
I am new to this website and thought it could really help me out while rebuilding my 1981 kz1000 k1. When i purchased it from my uncle, it had a leaking head gasket. i have since replaced it and reassembled the engine. I started it up for the first time and the new gasket started leaking! i am not sure why, my guess is a clogged oil passageway??? leaking from the left front corner. Can anybody help me?

Did you check the head and block for flatness?

Did you replace the O-ring?

Was a dowel pin missing?

Did someone replace an exhaust stud and thread into an oil passage?

usually this leak is do to the o-rings for the oil passages. My '85 750 had this problme thought it was the head gaskets untill i got it apart.

Contrary to opinions here,KZ1000 leaking head
gaskets are common.I checked with the KZ1000P
listed top complaints from police departments
and head gaskets were number 2.Leaking valve
cover gaskets are number 1.Kawasaki now makes
a graphite valve cover gasket but graphite head
gaskets are not available.Did you put new OEM
o-rings and gaskets in place? Viton (brown) o-
rings may work better than the stock neoprene
ones.Have a good shop surface the head,I have
tried to save money and not done this,I usually
have to take it back apart again. You may be able
to pull one stud at a time and replace them with
HD studs without disturbing the cylinder. These
will also help. You can blow out the oil galleries
through the cam bearing oil holes.

silicone applied to the erea will stop that leak. If you replace the gasket, use some. It's the insurance your looking for.
