Starter / Trans issue, please help

My engine has an annoying issue where the starter gets the engine to turn about 1 revolution then you hear a whoel bunch of spinning. So ofcourse i thought it was the starter skipping. But after taking the starter off there are no signs of wear on the teeth. So i got frustrated enough to pull my engine yesterday and this is what i found.

After about a revolution or so the #1 gear keeps spinning and the #2 part stays stationary. Whats is this part and is it fixible, or am i just screwed?

You don't identify the bike model, so since I can see a primary chain I'll assume it's a 650/750.

If this goes well, here is a pic of the parts diagram from kawasaki.com showing the starter clutch (1 and 2 in your pic).

Edit:
Since you have identified it as a 78 KZ650, see my post below for the parts diagram.

Part #2 (starter clutch) seems to be a common issue with the KZ650's.
It can be either replaced as an assy, or simple rebuilt (providing the housing isn't damaged).

If you do a search in the archives under "starter clutch", there's a really great thread in there by KZr member OnkelB with step-by-step details, pics and part numbers for the replacement parts needed to do this repair.

Sorry about that, it's a 78 KZ 650. Im still trying to figure out whats failing in that diagram. I'm wondering if this is an ez fix or should i be looking for a parts bike for another motor.

78 KZ650 parts diagram, part numbers 10,11,and 12 are more than likely the problem, and they are available in a repair kit, check Z1 Enterprises for the kit.

Well i spent about 1/2 hour in the archives, i never found that thread on the install, i did find the part #'s thread though. Right now i'm so irritated i'm just gonna start taking shit apart. I don't feel like waiting for a manual to arrive. Now i gotta figure out how to loosen that crank chain:).

EDIT: Nevermind i found the pdf. Now i gotta order a rebuild kit. Thanks again

Everything came apart pretty easy. Luckily i've torn apart so many different types of engines i figured it out with no problem. I did find that pdf though. I'm gonna read through it before i reassemble it. Now i gotta order a repair kit and some gaskets. The jackass who had the buggy before me never replaced any gaskets, most of them are gone. Everythings siliconed together, ARGH, no wonder this thing leaks like crazy. Some people should not touch engines.
