They were running pretty rich before this adjustment - the exhaust smelled like half-burnt gasoline, and it backfired when I backed off the throttle. Since making this adjustment, no stinky exhaust, and no backfires either.
Hope this helps!

"21. On pilot screw models, turn pilot screw in carefully until it seats lightly, then back it out 1 1/8 turns. Install the limiter onto the pilot screw with tab pointing towards the front (Figure 25)." (emphasis and italics theirs)
I might be unclear about what everyone is calling air screws. This is the screw on the bottom of the carb, towards the front (from Figure 25 on page 142).

Hmm... Page 142 of my Clymer manual says:
"21. On pilot screw models, turn pilot screw in carefully until it seats lightly, then back it out 1 1/8 turns. Install the limiter onto the pilot screw with tab pointing towards the front (Figure 25)." (emphasis and italics theirs)

There can be 2 different sets of screws. If your screws are on the bottom of the carbs tucked in by the float bowls, those would be called idle FUEL screws. If you have screws above the bowls in the main carb body those would be called idle AIR screws. The pic below shows where air screws are located.
