Fouling Spark Plugs KZ1000
09 May 2007 19:32
Hope someone can help? I have a 1981 kz1000, And i have a problem fouling plugs about every 200 or 250 miles. I have tried high octane fuel (no luck). My air mixture screw is about 3/4 turn. The plugs are carboned up pretty good, don't even get a faint spark out of them. Anyone one have any ideas, I would love to hear them, they would be GREATLY APPRECIATED! Thanks Jeff:dry:

Have you tried the coil mod - or at least checked to see the power you're getting to your coils? Sounds like they might not be firing strong enough..

are you running the right plugs? is it smoking and burning oil?
run a compression check, check the timing, do a through tune up then look at the carbs, may have too large of jets, wiredgeorge is the carb guru, he can recomend the right set up for them

I had a real nice customer call me yesterday with the same symptoms... seems oiled Emgo pod filters will cause fouled plugs. You could have weak spark OR the valves can be tight (lack clearance). See the tech articles on both subjects on our website. These are located under "wg's Tech Stuff Index" and called Coil Repowering and Valve Clearances. The reason those articles are on our site is that we would prefer not doing business with folks who have fouled plugs NOT caused by carburetor issues. I would say that about 2/3 of the fouled plug problems out there are due to:
1. poor spark
2. lack of valve clearance
3. wrong plugs
4. dirty air filter (or oiling a paper element)
You might also have the float levels set too high which WILL cause rich operation. Muck with the carburetors AFTER you have verified all these other items.

Thanks all who replied. You all have been helpful. I have great compression in all 4 cyclinders (150lbs
-). All the carbs have been synced and have the stock jets. Coils have 12volts to them. Next thing i'm going to try is, Adjusting my valves. Thanks wiredgeorge for the help web site you have, It explains everything.
Thanks Again All and Wish Me Luck

if you have good comprssion its not your valves. And its not the 12volts to the coils your worried about, its the resistence in them.
I would suggest reading more before wasteing money on stuff. Its either weak spark or carb problem.

I had the same situation. If you also have lots of black smoke out of the exhaust it's your air filter thats dirty and also check to see that your spark plugs have the appropriate gap
