Wouldn't it make a difference if the bike were operated at 100 degrees or 40 degrees? I think so... seems between 45C and 60C might be a range that takes in temp variations.

GordDesigns: In what state of tune is the 1977 KZ1000? Stock? And where does this bike live? Florida? Alaska?

Yes good point , sorry I missed giving all the info.
At first all I was looking for was a base line number, just to judge by.
First off, Stock no.
1428cc 10.5 to 1 comp. with a 900 crank and lightend clutch basket and no starter gears. 435 cams and gixer carbs. 10 row oil cooler hung out in front of the fork.

Location , just north of Toronto Canada.
Hope that helps.
A shot from last year ... before the rebuild.

I put a kitchen thermometer (like a small meat temp probe) in my oil gally at the side of the case last year and i got 180 degrees at crusing speed and it went just over 220 when road hard but the guage only went to 220. I got a new 1 for this year that goes to 240*.I JUST DRILLED A HOLE IN THE galley plug and siliconed it in.

GordDesigns: I commute to work year round here in Central Florida where I ride one of my two Zs. My '73 Z1-900 has lived in Hawaii, Southern California, and Florida. I put a VDO Oil Temp Gauge on my '73 Z1 in 1980 -- this bike had a Lockhart #700 Oil Cooler and a Lockhart Oil Thermostat on it for over 2 decades though. Oil temp during the winter here is 140-180 degrees F, and 220-240 degrees F during the summer, in traffic. But I replaced the Lockhart #700 oil cooler with a more modern one from JC Whitney about 5 years ago, which dropped summer oil temp another 30 degrees F. So now I see oil temp of 'only' 210 degrees F during the summer.
