Help me determine my engines year

I just bought a single person dune buggy and it has a KZ 650 engine in it. I'd like to perform some maintenance on it but i need to figure out what year it is. If any of you could tell me if there are any stamping or markings i should look for i'd appreciate it. Thanks jay

The engine number should be stamped into the flat portion on the right (clutch) side of the crankcase right by the oil fill cap.

Ok i found the # it's KZ650BE033905. I was told it was an early 80's but by the #'s it seems to be a late 70's. It looks to me like i have a 78. Am i correct in my assumption?

Yep, that's a '78 KZ650B engine you have.

I should have mentioned it before, the '79~ engines have smog port covers (reed valves) on the exhaust portion of the valve cover as well as some other emissions crap, the earlier models didn't have this.
