Help!!!! Timing on a KZ1000m was created by jeffcool326
Hi, I have a 1981 kawasaki KZ1000m. I have run into a problem with this bike. I purhased this bike off of ebay, and it ran great. Recently I was out for a ride and my timing chain tensioner came unsrewed and was lost. I noticed a really loud noise when it happened, Shut it off and had it hauled home. I bought a new one, Installed it. And know it has a hard time starting. My question is, Can anyone explain to me how to time the cams in, or can i check to see if they are timed in right. Thanks Jeffrey:(

Well THAT sucks!:pinch:
Hopefully You didn't bend any valves.:(

Do You have a manual for the bike?If not,You'll for sure want to get one(Ebay),or even check around here for the needed info.
There's a search function on the forum, and if You do a search,You WILL find a LOT of info on that topic Bud.

So the bike will still start then?

Hi Thanks for the quick response. The bike runs fine when it is running. I have noticed alittle bit more smoke (very little maybe see things lol) It just has a hard time starting like is has jumped a tooth on one of the cams. Thanks

Jeff,I'm just getting ready to go for a ride here, but I THINK I might have that info saved on My computer.I used to have some scanned pages out of My manual that I could email You if I can find them,or maybe Someone else does.
Anyway...I'll check in later on Bud.

Do You have the tools to do a compression test?
You should do that in the meantime.Remember though,if You do...throttle wide open and all plugs out of the engine,ok.;) (in case You don't know)

If it is the same as my 77, put the timing
at "T" on 1 & 4. #4 cam lobes(closest to you)
will be pointing toward eachother or away from
eachother.A ruler across the cams should align
with the tips and be halfway on both shafts,
and be parrallel with the top of the head.If
not, it has jumped time.
