Cometic head gaskets. was created by tjettim
I just did a 1197 kit on my old tired 1170 Kaw.
The Wiseco kit suposedly came with a cfm 20 Cometic
head gasket. It leaked oil as soon as the engine warmed up.When I went to order a graphite gasket(like I knew
I should have in the first place)I was told by Cometic they were discontinued.I work on high pressure boilers and all the modern gaskets for them are graphite.Copper just doesn't hold up as well.I think I have located
one but this situation definetly puts a damper on wanting to punch out KZs.I went through all kinds of
heads gaskets years ago until the Cometic graphite solved my problems.Am I alone.

The oringed sleeves don't help the oil leaks
around the oil galleries. That is why some of
the drag racers use external oil lines to the
head. I do not want to resort to that for a
street bike.

I assume you got the one piece. Did you leave the center o'ring in, or fill the groove with silicon?

Are you using stock studs?

One piece gasket,no oring, no silicone,
Ape cylinder studs-32ftlbs.I ran the
1170 this way with a graphite gasket
for over 20,000 miles with no leaks.
I have thought about filling the oring
cavity with silicone seal though,just
making it flush with the cylinder.Any
opinions here? My gasket has not arrived
yet,I hope I don't have to look again
for one.Anyone know who still has any in
stock for a 76mm bore KZ?

I used a copper gasket successfully in my 1135 motor and am putting it back in again(after heating it with a blow torch to resoften it,do not quench with water after, let it air cool, then clean with scotch brite pad). You can go to 42ft lbs on the ape studs. You will need to fill the o ring groove with silicone and use K&W Copper Coat sealer. The copper gaskets are at a disadvantage while the eng. is warming up .This is where the copper coat helps to keep the seal (it never hardens.)Once the eng. is up to temp and all parts have expanded the copper gasket will do the work. Cometic is a better choise for a low compression(10.25:1 or less)motor but if you cant get 1 you will be ok with a copper 1.Good luck.

Put silicon in the o'ring groove and torque our studs to 42 lbs.

If you don't get your gasket, call us.
