305 refuses to go over 60mph

I have a 1982 305 and this is my first bike. The tach is broken so I don't know exactly where I am in rpm's but it is certainly not red lining at 60 in 6th gear, but just starts lurching if I try to push it past this point. I'm thinking it's probably starving for fuel but am unsure. Any help with diagnosis and fixes would be great. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum. Ouch, kind of tough to ride on the freeway at 60 mph. I can barely walk and chew gum at the same time, so my advice is limited. Have you tried rebuilding the carbs? I'm sure many others will chime in with better advice.

Also, make sure nothing is blocking the intake at the air filter. I know that one from experience.

Good luck.:)

Welcome to KZR!;)

Does Your bike have a fuel filter on it?
Is the tank clean?...petcock clean?
Float height set properly?
How long did the bike sit for,if it did?
Points good?(if it has points...not sure on the 305)
Timing issues perhaps?

There could be a list of things causing the bike to be lacking power in that range...need more info,Bud.

I am with Sandy on this. There are three things that could be the problem:

FUEL: either a kinked line, clogged filter, or clogged carb passages. Disassemble, clean, install a new filter (and maybe new lines -- they do disintigrate from the inside).

AIR: clogged filter, or obstructed intake

SPARK: You will notice a weak ignition system especially when it is under load, at higher RPMs. Make sure you have a good blue spark, and ensure that the points are moving freely. Also, dissasemble, clean and lube the mechanical advance mechanism.

Let us know what you learn.

Serious performance issues on bone stock (I assume your bike is bone stock) low mileage bikes are usually FUEL related (as in carbs/petcock/fuel filter), a dirty air cleaner, or
and in my experience this is most likely
a rusted, frozen, timing advancer.

It seems like most folks out on the streets don't know that the timing advancer exists, and as the years go by these bikes (especially the smaller ones like yours) are used only to learn on - and the bikes "performance" is not taken into consideration. Hence no one ever bothers to get the machine running "good".

Beware, bikes with frozen timing advancers will run very very hot hot hot. This is a dead giveaway!

First two likely probs are carb or the ignition advancer.

Make sure the diaphragm at the top of the carb has no holes or tears in it.

Make sure the advancer advances.

Was out of town for a bit. It was the air filter. Got a new one and now it runs great. Thanks for all the help.
