Starter and or starter clutch 750-4 '81

Just got the bike together and installed the battery to check the electrical. Everything works fine except the starter. I cranked the engine over without fuel just to get some oil moving around. The starter engages for about a second and then freewheels as though the engine has started. The engine is still tight from rebuild. Does anyone have any experience with this. Does the secondary shaft have to come out again??? Any help would
be appreciated.

Well, after reading as many posts as possible about my problem. I reluctantly removed the starter clutch and sure enough a couple of the five cent springs were broken. Just a little advise to those who are rebuilding their 750-4, check those little devils before you assemble. My book says to check that rotation is free one way and locks in the opposite direction. Go the extra step and disassemble the starter clutch and look.
