Starter Clutch Springs.....

I have broken springs in my starter clutch. I just replaced these a year or two ago, but they are bad.
The pins and rollers are not showing wear at all, so I really just need the springs. I don't want to pay $30 for the whole kit, plus, the last kit springs didn't last. My question is, "How critical is the strength of the spring in making the starter clutch work"? Basically, can I just get three springs that are the same size and "feel" about the same? What if they are too strong?

I have no idea what the answer is, but wanted to say I love the people on this site! Every other one is a MacGuyver like me! We should start a thread for a list of things we have fixed more cheaply than replacing with a new one.
