1981 GPZ1100 head change
21 Apr 2007 05:59
Hi,
Is it possible to change the head without taking the motor out of the frame?
Also, how difficult is this job? I'm ok in genral mechanic but not much in internal of motor.
This is the model with fuel injection. Is there something specialI would need to know.
Many thanks for your advice,
Joce

Yes, the head can be relatively easily removed from the motor while still in the frame. In fact, the entire motor can be dissassembled while still in the frame. Why are you removing the head? Before you remove the head, I strongly encourage you to purchase/borrow a Kawasaki shop manual as it will have step-by-step detailed instructions on the technique.

Great news. I had a cb750 sohc and you could remove the valve cover without removing the motor!!!
Why I change it. When the motor is running, you can see the spark from the plug trough the head.
It's maybe a small crack in the head or fire jumping somewhere.
What do you think.
P.S.: Shop manual is my bible

Assume the easy fix first...make sure there are no cracked spark plug caps or split spark plug wires...these could be the cause of visible sparks. Convince yourself that the head is cracked before you remove it...by the time you get done pulling and replacing the head, it can be fairly expensive... special tools, gasket set, valve seals, perhaps cam chain adjusters, etc. If you have to pull the head, you should (since you already have it off) check cam chain, cam chain adjusters, etc., relap valves, replace valve stem seals...and if, by chance, your head is cracked, you may have to replace the entire thing

How about a little more detail? If there is a crack in the head you should have some sort of leakage there (air and fuel).Maybee noise of compresion leak.Compresion in that cyl should be lower. There should be a lack of power. If the crack is big enough to see spark through you should have all these signes ,I would think. Are you sure the spark isnt on the outside ?

yeah it would be more than a spark you would be seeing,it would be more like an explosion !:S it would run like a tractor and be making lots of noise!check your plug wires

Hi guys,
Heard the bike running tonight and it was very good.
Was running on 4 and haven't been able to see any spark light.
It had start on first attemp even if the bike haven't run for many months.
Seem like fire is jumping somewhere.
No leakage sound neither.

The motor stop once at hot temperature.
And I have to possibility to put a hand on Spectre carbs.
BTW, seems llike it an 1982 model. Injector are in the throtle body.
