KZ 650 engine ID
09 Apr 2007 17:56
Sorry I posted the in chassis also. Browser trouble.
I just bought a used KZ650 motor and I was wondering why there are no breather tubes on the new motor on the front of the cam cover. My bike I think is a 77, though I'm not completely sure it's out of state right now. My old motor has 2 breathers on top of the cam cover on the front of the motor. Any suggestions? When I put the new motor in should I just forget the breather tubes? We think the new motor came out of a 77 but we don't know for sure.
The vin of of the motor is KZ650BE0254864
Thanks for the help.

Sounds like your current motor (bike too?) is a 79 or newer. I believe in 79, maybe late 79 they added a "air injection" system installed on top of the forward valve cover. The "new" motor is a previous model which does not have this system. When the valve stops working or you just want to disable it, most people (including me) just discard the system and run a length of hose from breather tube to breather tube.

Check your engine # again. I think you have 1 too many numbers in there.
If I were to guess, it sounds like a 77 C1 engine.
YES, just forget the breather tubes, use the cam cover that came with the engine.

You do have one too many numbers, but KZ650BE025xxx would be a 1977 KZ650B or C. The engines in the B and C were all serial #KZ650BE with 6 numbers after that. As to your other questions, yes 1979 started the clean air injection setup on top of the engine is what you have. There is no problem running this 1977 engine on your bike without the injection, however there is one pretty important issue you will need to contend with. The 1977 charging system is completely different than what your 1979 uses and is not compatible. You have 2 options. Either you need the separate regulator and rectifier and associated wiring off the 1977 to replace your 1979 setup. Not recommended.
The other option is to use your 1979 stator and stator cover on the 1977 engine. This means taking off the stators and swapping them which involves a special tool, and swapping the covers, but the positioning dowels are reversed on the 1979 cover vs the 1977 engine, so drilling and swapping the dowels is going to have to be done.
Not a drop in engine I'm afraid.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

As already mentioned the 77 B and C engines use a different alternator setup than the rest of the 650s - the 77 engines are easily identifiable by the three bolt holes in the alternator cover (for holding the field coil), the rest of the 650s don“t have these holes.

If he uses the 77 motor in a newer frame won't he have some extra holes in the airbox that would need plugging?

Hmmmmm.
I think there is on hole for a hose to the emissions stuff that is in the middle of the box and above the four intake holes that would need plugged.
