I am just about ready for a rebuild on my 78 kz1000 A2. I would like a little more displacement, but I want to keep the stock exhaust and air cleaners. And most importantly i would like to keep it reliable, i commute on it so i want to keep it simple.

What is the next size up kit for the 1000cc engine? 1050?

1075,and then the 1105 from Wiseco.
Most are going with the 1075(I went 1105)and yes,it's still reliable.B)

Go with the 1105 and an oil cooler. You might want to think about some bigger carbs also. At least 28's. The 26's will leave you angry at the world.

26mm carbs are not too bad, they are smoother than the 28's at idle and mid throttle.

The 1105 bore in stock cylinders will leave the cylinder sleeve wall thickness a bit thin. Most go with the 1075 to keep some meat in the cylinder sleeve to help dissapate heat. Have always been told to use 1075 bore in stock 1000 sleeves for this reason for the street. Lots of racers use the 1105 but they are only using them to race so they don't get the heat soak as much either. A 1105 can be run on the street as some do, as mentioned, but the 1075 should be stronger in strength area of sleeve. Or go to bigger sleeves and go 1197 like wireman says. 26mm will give you better response and more pull on bottom end and around town but the 28mm+ would be better for midrange and top end...marginally but better. 1075's love 29 smoothbores though but $$$!

What kind of machine work is required for the 1075? Case and cylinders? or just the cylinders?

just a cylinder bore.but measure your bores 1st to make sure they will clean up at 1075 before spending the money.ape sells wiseco pistons,z1 might have them also not sure;)

The 1075 does nicely in stock 1000 sleeves, staying nice and round. 1105s in stock sleeves are too thin and can not hold shape. A sealed up 1075 will make more power than a leaking 1105.
We try to discourage people from doing the 1105s.

1075 is a simple bore and hone.
